My true story…

I bought a static caravan for £22,000 and kept it for 4 years. When I decided to sell it I was offered just £5,000 from two different traders – a £17,000 loss! When I asked why the offers were so low both traders said it was down to depreciation so I decided to check. We all know that static caravans, touring caravans and camper vans all depreciate but by how much? It turns out that caravans – both types – depreciate at about 15% per year. If that sounds high then you might be surprised to know that cars also depreciate at about 15% a year and that is a level of depreciation that we all accept. Camper vans fair slightly better and only depreciate at about 10% per year.

Don’t throw “your money” away…

What that meant was that the static caravan that I bought for £22,000 and owned for 4 full years had an approximate RETAIL value of £12,000. This reduction in the value can genuinely be put down to depreciation but that was still £7,000 more than the trade price I was being offered! If I sold to a trader at £5,000 – ‘the trade price‘ – they would then sell it at a RETAIL price of £12,000 generating a profit of £7,000 for themselves, all of which would have been my money – or could be “Your Money”.

– So what’s the alternative to a trader?

Static Caravan owners know as well as I do that if you type ‘Sell my static caravan’ into a search engine then you will be inundated with traders willing to offer you a ‘free valuation’ or ‘free quote’ (who charges for these anyway?!). Their ‘free valuations’ and ‘free quotes’ will be in line with my story above. If you do find a website to list your caravan on you will be up against the same traders or, worse still, you will be contacted by traders anyway no doubt offering you a ‘free valuation’ or ‘free quote’. Touring caravan and camper van sellers do not fair much better.

Traders circle websites offering you a quick sale or making you believe that selling to a trader is the only option or that selling to a trader is ‘hassle free’. Selling to a trader will come at a significant cost to you – it would have cost me £7,000. The industry in saturated with traders offering the ‘best prices paid’ and there was quite simply no dedicated website for a Private Seller to be able to sell to a Private Buyer at a full and fair price.
